Nilay Jani, originally from India, has carved a path in his professional journey, transitioning from the hospitality industry to a technical role in New Zealand's thriving construction sector.
At age 35, Nilay says Future Skills played a pivotal role in shaping his career.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Tourism Management, Nilay started his career in the hotel industry. After gaining valuable experience, he moved into a non-technical role as a Regulatory Support Officer at Auckland Council. It was there that he developed an interest in the construction industry and explored the possibility of becoming a Building Surveyor.
Future Skills’ NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (Level 6) qualification aligned perfectly with his aspirations, offering practical knowledge and technical skills essential for the role.
The programme provided a solid foundation in building regulations, construction methods, and technical analysis. Beyond technical proficiency, Nilay honed his report-writing, communication, and problem-solving skills. Despite the challenges of balancing work and study, he credits effective time management and support from tutors and classmates for his success.
Graduating from Future Skills was a defining moment for Nilay, enabling him to secure a role as a CCC Assessor at Auckland Council.
"I have gained confidence in my technical abilities and a deeper understanding of the construction industry," he says.
Looking ahead, Nilay plans to deepen his expertise and grow his career within the industry while inspiring others to seize opportunities for upskilling.
Nilay encourages prospective students to be dedicated, hardworking, and leverage the support available at Future Skills. He praises the institution’s collaborative environment, high-quality resources, and focus on real-world applications.
For Nilay, the decision to join Future Skills was transformative, turning his aspirations into reality and paving the way for a fulfilling career in New Zealand’s construction sector.
