Graduate Sherley Maiarii says moving to New Zealand had been one of her goals since she was very young, so being able to study here felt like a real privilege.

Sherley comes from New Caledonia, a small French Pacific island just a three-hour flight from New Zealand.

“In fact, New Caledonia is one of New Zealand’s closest neighbours in the Pacific,” she says.

She completed her schooling in New Caledonia, including a tertiary qualification in Commercial Operations Management.

Sherley moved to New Zealand in 2023 to improve her English and gain international experience.

“Since then, I have been working as a relief teacher in Early Childhood Education (ECE), which helped me develop my communication skills, confidence, and passion for working with children.”

She completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Management alongside her work.

Sherley says she decided to study at our Auckland International Campus because she was looking for an international learning environment. She wanted to experience New Zealand’s multicultural environment and create better opportunities for her future career.

“One of the best things about studying at AIC was meeting people from many different cultures and backgrounds. I know that I have made friendships that will last a lifetime,” she says.

“This experience helped me grow personally, culturally, and professionally.”

Like many international students, Sherley faced challenges balancing study and personal responsibilities. She says she overcame these challenges by staying focused on her goals, building friendships, and asking for support when needed.

“My advice would be to stay open-minded, believe in yourself, and not be afraid to ask for help. Studying abroad can be challenging at times, but it is also a very rewarding experience that helps you grow in many ways. Make the most of every opportunity and enjoy the journey.”

Now that she has completed her studies at AIC, Sherley hopes to continue studying in the teaching field and become a qualified teacher.

“I would like to keep gaining experience in education while continuing to grow professionally and personally in Aotearoa.”

She is also passionate about learning more about Polynesian cultures across the Pacific.

“As a Mā’ohi (Tahitian), I feel deeply connected to our shared roots and traditions. I am also passionate about Ori Tahiti dance, working with children, and learning new things.”
