Mia Kamps has always had a passion for working with children. Since the age of 15, she has gained invaluable experience in that area as a babysitter and nanny all of which solidified her desire to turn this passion into a career.

Originally from Germany, Mia decided to explore various educational programmes and reached out to the team at Future Skills. After many calls and reading through information, she settled on pursuing an Early Childhood Education (ECE) Level 5 diploma.

Last year, she completed the Level 3 course which served as a springboard for further studies. This achievement not only equipped Mia with essential skills but also instilled a newfound confidence to continue her educational journey.

She describes the experience at the Ashton Warner Academy as “immensely positive”.

“The staff and tutors have been incredibly supportive and encouraging, ensuring that every student feels valued. Everyone has been so supportive, which has made my experience amazing.”

Balancing full-time work with studies and a social life has posed some challenges.

“Time management has been tricky, but whenever I felt overwhelmed, the tutors were always there with solutions and support.

“The availability of one-on-one meetings has also been a huge help,” she says.

One of the highlights of studying at the Ashton Warner Academy is the flexibility offered in learning options, whether online, part-time, or in-person. This variety makes it easier for students to tailor their education to fit their lives.

Aside from receiving the Level 3 certification, Mia says she has gained confidence in academic writing, especially since English is not her first language.

She encourages prospective students to embrace the opportunity.

“Don’t be scared and don’t think you’re not capable. Everyone at the Ashton Warner Academy wants you to succeed, and in this supportive environment, you will.”

Mia also values the culturally aware and supportive community at Ashton Warner, which fosters an inclusive atmosphere for all. This commitment to diversity ensures that everyone’s needs are met, enhancing the overall learning experience.

As Mia continues her journey towards becoming a teacher, she has a clear sense of purpose and excitement. With her newfound knowledge and confidence, she is eager to make a meaningful impact in the lives of New Zealand children.
