Gyatri Sen is a dedicated early childhood educator from Manukau who has turned her passion into purpose through continued learning.
Originally from Fiji, Gyatri has worked as an Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher at BestStart in Manukau for several years. Despite her busy schedule, she saw an opportunity to advance her career while maintaining her role at the centre.
She decided to pursue her NZ Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) at Ashton Warner Academy (AWA) because of its flexible online structure.
“The course allows me to study part-time, with two evening sessions per week, without taking time off work.”
This flexibility of learning made it possible for her to gain a recognised qualification while continuing to do what she loves - nurturing young minds daily.
Although she already had practical work experience, Gyatri says she values the opportunity of being able to deepen her theoretical understanding.
“The course has taught me a lot about various topics in depth which I can apply directly in my work.”
Her tutors and the supportive environment at AWA helped her overcome challenges, such as navigating the online Moodle student portal for assessments and strengthening her confidence with digital tools.
Gyatri emphasizes AWA’s welcoming and diverse community.
“The best part about studying at AWA is connecting with other students and learning from them. The staff and tutors, like Sam, Holly, and Christine, were incredibly supportive.”
This sense of belonging and encouragement has enriched both her personal and professional life.
Now with her Diploma almost finished, Gyatri plans to continue her education in ECE at the next level.
Her advice to others considering this path is to continue their journey in education and strive to achieve their goals.
Gyatri says studying at AWA has been hugely rewarding.
“I feel I have grown both professionally and personally. This journey has been fruitful, and I’m thankful to everyone who has supported me along the way.”
Her story stands as a testament to the power of lifelong learning, demonstrating that with determination and the right support, balancing work, study, and personal growth is transformative.
