Welcoming a new international cohort

Our newest intake of Future Skills international students is getting to know our teams and facilities at their Orientation events this week.
Our undergraduate students had their Orientation day yesterday and our postgraduate students are on campus today.
Today’s Orientation began with a formal welcome from staff and mihi whakatau. ICT and Facilities Manager Sonny Teio then took our students through the Future Skills values.
Academic Director Russell Harray then addressed students, talking about our multicultural city and campus. That multicultural environment was very good for learning.
He said in the Applied Management department alone we had staff from more than 16 different nationalities. They understood what it was like to come to a new country and could relate to international students.
Russell talked about our experiential approach to learning. Students would be very involved in the learning process in their small classes. That meant they’d be working in groups, presenting back to the class, looking at real-world case studies, and getting involved.
At this week’s Orientation events, students have also had the chance to meet our teams and hear about the campus facilities and support services.
They’ve taken part in workshops about academic success and employability, gone on a campus tour, and attended IT inductions.
