AIC Students Gain Hands-On Insight into Timber-Framed Construction

Students from Auckland International Campus recently attended a residential construction site visit at 186 Church Street, Onehunga, where 17 residential homes are currently under construction. The visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to observe different stages of timber-framed residential construction in a practical, real-world setting.

During the visit, Site Supervisor Ashok provided an overview of the development and explained the key construction activities taking place on site. Students observed timber wall, floor and roof framing, bracing systems, structural connections, fixings and construction sequencing. They also gained insight into how construction drawings and specifications are translated into practical building work.

The visit enabled students to connect classroom learning with current New Zealand residential construction practices. Students developed a stronger understanding of timber-framed construction in relation to NZS 3604 and relevant New Zealand Building Code requirements, including structural stability, durability, construction quality and weathertightness.

Students also learned about the importance of site inspections and quality control throughout different stages of construction. Observing building components and installation methods firsthand helped strengthen their understanding of the relationship between construction documentation, building standards and on-site practice.

Overall, the visit provided a valuable experiential learning opportunity, enhancing students’ understanding of residential timber-frame construction, construction sequencing and the practical application of New Zealand building requirements.
