Dr Barry Dowdeswell is a Senior Lecturer in Software Engineering at Auckland International Campus. He has developed software since the 1980s, working for international organisations like Canon as well as running his own e-commerce software development company for 27 years.
Returning to university, Barry, also known to colleagues and students by his life-long nickname “Badger”, studied Cyber-Physical Industrial Control Systems and Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) devices at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). During that research, he developed safety-critical fault diagnostic applications that he is still researching and developing today.
At AIC, his main focus is on final-year Studio projects in the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) programs. Recent student projects have included application development for a German health and fitness company, building web, AI, and mobile applications to assist trainers and their clients working out in the gym. These collaborations provide students with excellent opportunities to work on complex real-world projects, putting into practice everything they have learnt in previous courses.
