Fire engineering technicians are in demand across New Zealand. The skills developed through this Diploma align with the needs of growing sectors, ensuring strong employment prospects.

 

This qualification is ideal for people who are already working in this field or plan to map out a career in fire engineering.

Graduates of this programme will be equipped for roles such as:

- Design and management of fire safety in buildings.

- Installation and maintenance of fire safety systems.

- Roles within the regulatory and compliance sector, including fire safety inspections and assessments.

This qualification also provides pathways to further education, such as the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice or Bachelor of Engineering Technology.

Fire engineering is a specialized field focusing on fire safety and risk management in construction and industry. Fire engineers can expect starting salaries around NZD 70,000 increasing with specialization and experience up to $160K.​

For entry to this programme, applicants are required to have:

  • NCEA Level 2 including a minimum of 10 literacy credits at Level 1 or above (for those who achieved NCEA Level 2 before 2013)
  • A minimum total of 48 credits at level 2 in four subjects including at least 12 credits in mathematics (preferably achievement standards in algebra, calculus or trigonometry)

or

  • equivalent qualifications (e.g. International Baccalaureate or Cambridge), or
  • equivalent credits from appropriate trades training and/or demonstrated skills and experience. In addition to meeting the minimum entry criteria, those applicants for whom English is a second language (including International students) must meet the IELTS overall language requirement: Overall Band Score (Academic) of 6.0 IELTS, with no individual score less than 5.5, or equivalent.

The programme consists of 16 courses, each worth 15 credits, totalling 240 credits. These include:

  • Core courses such as Engineering Fundamentals, Engineering Mathematics, and Technical Literacy.
  • Specialised fire engineering courses like Fire Protection Systems (Active and Passive), Fire Dynamics, and Fire Risk Assessment & Hazard Analysis.

New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice or Bachelor of Engineering Technology.

You will have access to classes each week where you can ask your lecturers questions about your assessments and learning. We also have a dedicated Student Services Team who can help you with any academic or personal issues you face during your time with us.
