Construction project managers usually earn $92,000 to $204,000 a year, and senior construction managers and project directors usually earn $120,000 to $224,000 a year and can earn more. Diploma-qualified graduates typically start at the lower end of these ranges while working under a supervising practitioner, with pay growing in line with experience and the size and complexity of the projects they manage.
High job prospects
Construction is New Zealand's fifth-largest industry, contributing 6.3% of GDP and employing around 308,500 people. The MBIE National Construction Pipeline Report 2025 projects total construction activity rising from $55.7 billion in 2025 to $65.4 billion by 2030, with more than 200,000 new homes consented over the six-year forecast and infrastructure activity reaching $19.6 billion by 2030.
Auckland accounts for over a third of New Zealand's construction activity, particularly for housing, but there are opportunities elsewhere including major roading projects, the ongoing Christchurch rebuild, and Wellington's earthquake-strengthening work. Demand is consistent for site managers, project managers and construction supervisors across residential, commercial and infrastructure projects.
International students
Construction managers and project builders are recognised as in-demand roles across New Zealand. International graduates with a full-time job offer and the right experience and qualifications may find it easier to apply for a visa with this background.
