How to build a study schedule as a part-time student

If you’re balancing part-time study and work, family commitments or other personal activities, a study schedule could be useful for you.

Creating a study schedule can help you achieve your learning goals while also prioritising the other responsibilities in your life.

Here are seven simple steps to help you get that schedule sorted!

1. Work out how much time you have each week to dedicate to your studies. Factor in your work hours, travel time, and all of your other responsibilities and commitments.

2. Identify your most productive hours. Perhaps you work better in the evenings with fewer distractions, or alternatively you find you’re more of a morning person. Be sure to schedule at least some of your study time in your peak productivity zones.

3. Use a diary, digital planner or scheduling app to plan your weeks. Allocate blocks of time for your studies and your other commitments – and be sure to include breaks and some rest and relaxation time!

4. Ensure your schedule is consistent wherever possible. Having a regular routine can make it easier to ‘automate’ healthy habits and stay on track.

 5. Identify important study milestones and deadlines. Make sure you allocate sufficient preparation time for major assignments, exams and projects.

6. Regularly review your schedule and make tweaks where needed. The goal is to maintain a sustainable routine that supports both your learning and your lifestyle.

7. Talk to your teachers or support staff if you’re struggling to find the right balance. They’re on hand to provide the support and guidance you need to succeed.
