Make your study count - tips and strategies to get the most from your studies

By developing sustainable study habits, you’ll make the most of your learning experience as you create a brighter future for yourself.

Here are our top study tips and tricks for new students (though they’re helpful for students of all ages and experience levels).

 Establish a study routine

Adopt consistent routines that align with your life and preferences by setting aside dedicated study times – and do your best to stick to them.

Research shows that consistency creates habits. These behaviours become more automatic, requiring less effort and helping to maintain motivation and productivity.

 Use planning or organisational tools

You may find it useful to create daily or weekly plans or lists to help manage your time. These could be solely focused on study, or include other commitments such as work requirements and personal activities.

There are many free printable planner templates and digital planning tools available online. You can be as detailed and down-to-the-minute (or not!) as you like – whatever suits you best.

 Find your ideal study spots

Some students find it easier to get their work done at home, while others prefer to be on campus. Some like to study in quiet libraries, while others thrive in more bustling environments like cafes.

Experiment with different settings to find out where you are most focused and productive.

 One step at a time

Large assignments become more manageable and less overwhelming when they are broken down into smaller tasks.

Working step-by-step can also help you feel more in control and allow you to track your progress and celebrate your wins.

Take notes

Effective notetaking can enhance your understanding and improve your retention of course material.

Focus on jotting down key categories or questions, and supporting information, answers and examples.

You could try out some popular notetaking techniques such as mind maps and Cornell notes to see if they’re right for you.

Speak up and reach out

Don’t be afraid ask questions, seek clarification, or enquire about academic or personal support services – your teachers and student support staff are all here to help you succeed.

Peer support can also be helpful and empowering. Consider forming small study groups with classmates where you can discuss course content and share thoughts, questions and insights.

Aim for a healthy balance

Sometimes it’s a challenge to balance study with life’s other responsibilities, and it is important to take care of yourself.

Try to ensure you’re getting adequate sleep, hydration, nutrition and physical activity – this will help you to maintain focus and energy. Remember to take breaks and enjoy regular downtime, too.

Don’t forget, student support staff can help if you’re experiencing difficulties with study or in your personal life.

Trust in your ability to learn and grow

Having a growth mindset is about acknowledging your ability to develop new knowledge and skills throughout your life.

Embrace opportunities for learning, and don’t forget to celebrate your achievements – big and small. Every step counts!

Appreciate the experience

Most importantly of all, enjoy your student experience!

This is a special time of inspiration, learning and development, and connection with fellow students, expert educators and industry professionals.
